Ireland’s freshest fish at Rene Cusack’s in Athlone

From Killybegs to Castletownbeare, Rene Cusack vans can be seen on the country’s roads, sourcing fresh fish daily for Rene Cusack’s fish shops and now Ireland’s foremost fish retailers have established an outlet in Belhavel in Athlone.             Attention to detail, an environmentally friendly ethos and an enthusiasm for the job has resulted in a continued expansion of the Rene Cusack brand. Athlone recently became the fourth outlet in this expanding family-run business. Cusack’s also operate two stores in Limerick and one in Ennis.             The location in Athlone is sure to prove popular with customers, being adjacent to the Golden Island Shopping Centre and right in the heart of the retail centre of the town.             Proprietor Paul Cusack attributes the popularity of Cusack’s to the freshness of the fish. ‘We go to the coast every day to collect the fish. We collect fish all over the country, from Killybegs to Castletownbeare. It wouldn’t be uncommon to meet a van in any corner of Ireland.’             Cusack’s is a family-run fish business, specialising in wild fresh fish. The Cusacks have been involved in the fish business for almost 100 years and the Athlone store carries a very broad range of stock, including fresh cod, organic salmon, undyed natural smoked haddock, lobster, swordfish, mussels and a range of other more exotic species. They also excel in preparing fish for the freezer and many households opt to stock up on a supply of fresh fish to ensure that young and old get the benefits from regular helpings of Ireland’s finest fish.             ‘We are also doing a new line in undyed natural smoked haddock. That’s a premium product and proves very popular with customers,’ said Paul. Other popular products at Cusack’s include fresh cod and organic salmon, which Paul says has really caught on, now that people are more concerned than ever about their health.             Paul is no stranger to Co. Roscommon. His wife is Lisa MacDermot from Castlerea, so he’s very familiar with the geography of the county and is hoping to see many Roscommon faces among the clientele at the Athlone store.             Rene Cusack’s is open from Monday to Saturday 9 am to 6 pm.
