Investigations continue into Donamon assault

Gardai in Roscommon town are continuing their investigations into last week’s assaut on the wife of a Garda in her home at Donamon, Co. Roscommon.    In the incident which happened at about 12.30 pm on Wednesday, 12th December, the woman was attacked by a man who was wearing a balaclava. She received minor injuries in the course of what was a very frightening experience.   The woman, who is in her early thirties and married to a Garda serving in the area, went to her kitchen on hearing a person enter the house via the back door.    She was confronted by a man wearing black clothes and a balaclava who demanded money and proceeded to assault the woman. The young woman had what Gardai described as ‘a brief struggle’ with the assailant before passing out. When she came to the man, who was the sole intruder, had departed.    There was also a break-in to the same house on the previous Sunday when a man broke into the house when the same woman was also alone. When the she confronted the assailant she was pushed to the ground. The assailant escaped with a small amount of money on that occasion.    The lady in question was treated by a doctor at the scene and did not need hospitalisation. Nothing was taken in the course of the break-in.      There was also a break-in to the same house on the previous Sunday when a man broke into the house when the same woman was also alone. When the she confronted the assailant she was pushed to the ground. The assailant escaped with a small amount of money on that occasion.    Gardai are appealing for information and anyone who may have seen anything suspcious in the Donamon area on the night of December 12th last  from 10 pm onwards should contact Gardai in Roscommon (telephone 090-6638300).    Gardai mounted an extensive search of the area after the attack and checkpoints were set up in the local area.   There was also a break-in to the same house on the previous Sunday when a man broke into the house when the same woman was also alone and when the she confronted the assailant she was pushed to the ground. The assailant escaped with a  small amount of money on that occasion.    Gardai are working on the assumption that both attacks are linked.
