International win for Nigel and Oisin

It has been a phenomenal weekend for Roscommon Handball starting with International success for Nigel Neilan and Oisin Naughton (Comans) who won the USA ‘B/C’ National Doubles Final beating Larry Borunda and Abel Rillo (USA/Mexico) 21-12, 21-18 in the final. In the semi-final Nigel and Oisin defeated Shillings and Weber of the USA 21-18, 21-7. In the Inter Varsities finals at Croke Park and Na Fianna Rikki O’Gara (NUIG) won the Senior Singles and Marianna Rushe (NUIG) won the Ladies Senior singles and with Orla Gaffney won the Ladies Senior doubles title, making it two Minor titles and two Inter Varsities title in the space of 2 weeks.  In the Men’s ‘B’ singles John Kennedy (Ballymoe Club and NUIG) was the winner. In the USHA Trials Leona Doolin is through to the final on the 3rd November and with Hilary Rushe won the Colleges (2nd level) Senior doubles Connacht title and play the semis and final on November 10th. Linda Connolly (Comans) is the Connacht Senior Singles champion. Inter Varsaties 60 X 30 Senior Singles Championship: Rikki O’Gara (NUIG) defeated Christopher Doolin (Sligo IT) in the final of the Senior singles 5-21, 21-16, 11-5 in a great match. Ladies Senior Singles Final: Marianna Rushe (NUIG) defeated Katie Costello (DIT) in a close final that the Galway student only won by a few points in the tie-breaker. Ladies Senior Doubles Final: Marianna Rushe (NUIG) and Lisa Loughnane (Clare) defeated Emer Fallon (UCD) and Orla Gaffney narrowly in the tie breaker to clinch the Senior doubles title. Mens ‘B’ Singles Final: John Kennedy of Ballymoe and NUIG put in a storming finish to defeat Niall Gordon of DIT to win the ‘B’ singles final. USHA Junior Trials: Hilary Rushe (Comans) got off to a fine start beating Stephanie Coleman (Ballaghaderreen) at Williamstown in the 17 and Under quarter final. She later lost to Louise Walshe of Kildare 21-17, 21-9 at Crinkle. All Ireland 60 X 30 Intermediate singles final: Ballina, Co. Tipperary is the venue for the intermediate singles final between Ashley Prendiville (Kerry) and Katie Costello next Saturday with the programme starting at noon with a ladies Junior ‘B’ doubles final between Clare and Laois.  Golden ‘A’ Doubles at St. Comans: A great win at Comans for Kevin Geraghty and Martin Cronin of Mayo. They beat Mick Gleeson and Gerry Spillane of Tipperary rather easily in straight games. Connacht Awards Function: The Connacht Awards Function takes place on Saturday 3rd November and all Roscommon players are asked to support it.
