Inaugural meeting of Cycle Network

The Roscommon Cycling Network was successfully launched at a well-attended public meeting in Gleeson’s, Roscommon town on Monday evening. A 10 km cycle on New Year’s Day is now planned and members also plan to liaise with relevant authorities to promote more cycling routes and cycling safety in coming months. The meeting was facilitated by Paddy Daly and Fiona Dunne and there was plenty of lively discussion and debate on what a Roscommon Cycling Network should be about. Paddy gave some background on why Roscommon needs a strong cycling network in order to promote the interests and welfare of cyclists across the county. He related his experiences of involvement with the London Cycle Network and how cycling and facilities for cyclists have developed over the years there. Cycling in a city like London is a pleasant and safe experience, as well as being a very practical and easy way of getting around. Fiona presented information on other cycle networks from around the country, including the Waterford, Cork and Galway cycle networks. Some of these groups had sent messages of support to the meeting and she outlined some of their main priorities. At this stage the participants at the meeting were broken into groups and each group was asked to identify three priority areas for a Roscommon Cycling Network. With feedback from each of the groups the priority areas identified for the Roscommon Cycling Network are: Development of cycle routes/lanes, visibility and safety for cyclists and the organisation of a public cycling event. After further discussion New Year’s Day 2008 was set as the day for a cycle starting in the Square in Roscommon at noon. This will be the first public event organised by the Roscommon Cycling Network and it is open to all ages, sizes and abilities. It will be a safe 10 km spin, helmets, a roadworthy bicycle and visibility gear will be essential. It will be a fantastic opportunity for a family cycle, maybe a chance to burn some rubber on Santa’s new bicycle, and a perfect day to start the year off on a healthy note! It will be a family friendly event with lots of surprises so mark it into your diary, more details later.  The meeting welcomed the presence of a new cycling Garda in Roscommon town and hopes to link up with the Gardai in relation to future cycling events.  For further information contact Paddy by e-mail or phone (090) 66 22974.
