Hurling Championship throws in this weekend

The Kepak Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship gets underway with three matches this Sunday.

At 12 Noon, champions Athleague will open the defence of their title against Oran in Athleague. Ronan O’Meara and Pat Nolan have retired so they will be looking for replacements for both those very experienced players, which will not be an easy task. Oran will be hoping for improvement this year. When the sides met last year Athleague won easily. There won’t be too much between them on Sunday.

Last year’s beaten finalists Tremane take on St. Dominic’s at 1.45 pm, also in Athleague. Dominic’s have certainly been making progress. They ran Four Roads all the way in the league final last Sunday, a match that will stand to them this weekend. They have dangerous forwards like Naos Connaughton, Mickey Joe Egan and Conall Kennelly. Peter Kellehan, Niall Kilroy the Brennans and the Gatelys will feature for Tremane. Dominic’s can start with a surprise win.

Four Roads take on Roscommon Gaels at 7 pm in Ballyforan on Sunday. The Gaels are managed by Ronan O’Meara this year that that is sure to bring about an improvement from them. But this is a very tough start for the town team. With Micheal Kelly, Conor Coyle, Mikey Lohan, Brendan Mulry and Cathal Dolan all playing well it is hard to see anything other than a win for the Tisrara club.
