HSE shows ‘appalling disregard’ of Rosalie staff – Murphy

Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has condemned the HSE’s treatment of staff at the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea as an “appalling disregard of loyalty” and noted that staff are “understandably enraged by unrealistic offers of redeployment”.

“The HSE’s treatment of staff members in the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea has been nothing short of appalling. Some staff have given 30 or 40 years’ service to the HSE and it is outrageous that despite their loyalty and professionalism over the years they are being treated in this unfair manner by the HSE.

“There has been a complete lack of forward thinking by HSE management on this issue and of course this move to redeploy staff comes after the regrettable decision to close the unit and move patients to alterative care facilities despite the best efforts of so many,” said Deputy Murphy.

“The staff and unions are understandably enraged by these unrealistic offers of redeployment as some staff are being offered redeployment in places such as Portumna or Ballinasloe – many staff have lived and worked in the Castlerea area for decades and such offers of redeployment are totally unrealistic.

“The Rosalie Unit is not an old dilapidated building, it is not a condemned building – it has been a home for vulnerable people for many years and despite the best efforts of families and politicians, the HSE did not consider the vulnerable state of these service users. We need to find a better way of doing things – it’s our job to stand up for vulnerable people,” said Deputy Murphy.
