Hospital: more confusion

Drumm firm in his view  Seamus Duke There is further confusion about the future of Roscommon County Hospital today after a meeting of the Oireachtas committee on health which was held in Leinster House yesterday (Wednesday).    At the meeting, the Minister for Health Mary Harney re-iterated her statement of two weeks ago in Athlone when she said that the plan to amalgamate surgical services at Roscommon County Hospital and Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe was going ahead as announced.   Also at yesterday’s meeting HSE chief Professor Brendan Drumm said that in-patient surgery at Roscommon County Hospital was ‘unsustainable into the future’ and that he would be explaining the situation to consultants in the western area at a meeting next week.   Fine Gael Deputy Denis Naughten, who was at yesterday’s meeting, said that he was stunned by the statement from Professor Drumm in particular. ‘It’s clear from what Brendan Drumm said here today that he is not coming down to discuss any alternative plans for Roscommon County Hospital
