Heart-breaking final defeat for Elphin girls

Elphin Community College Girls U-16 Cadette ‘C’ team just failed to emulate the boys team from 2007 when they were beaten in the All-Ireland final in Carlow by Brigidine Secondary School, Mountrath yesterday (Wednesday) evening.   The gallant Elphin team were beaten by two sets to one 17-25, 25-14, 22-25 and team coach Paul Noone explained that the team had played really well.        ‘We played ever so well but we just came up short in the end. We lost out in the first set after our opponents came up with some top class serves’ he told People Sport.   ‘Then in the second set we were in control all through and we won comfortably. However in the third set we were going well and we led by 21 to 17 at one stage but Mountrath finished the stronger team and they edged us out by three points. It was a heart-breaker but we played very well and I am so proud of the girls’ he said.    The Elphin panel is: Martha Higgins, Shannon Cull, Nicole Cauley, Laura Higgins, Orla Conroy, Alison Ganley, Sarah Brady, Marie O’Reilly, Denise O’Connor, Sandra Fox, Pookie Mitchell and Saffron Cull.
