Haydn’s ‘Te Deum’ in Athlone

The Athlone Choral Society will perform the Te Deum by Franz Joseph Haydn in the Radisson Hotel, Athlone on Sunday, April 27th at 8pm. Haydn was a frequent visitor to the Imperial Palace in Vienna and this magnificent choral drama in three parts was a commission from Empress Marie Therese, the wife of Franz 1 of Austria. The Te Deum is a choral work throughout with two lengthy Allegro passages surrounding a central Adagio, making the work a concerto for chorus and orchestra. The first authenticated performance of this piece was directed by the composer Haydn himself at Eisenstadt on 8th September, 1880. The Athlone Choral Society will be accompanied in this piece by The Alexander String Quartet and also by Daren Lane on Organ. The musical director of the choir is Sr. Maura Fay. Tickets for the concert, priced at €20, are available at McGorisk’s Pharmacy, John Broderick Street, Golden Island.
