Handball Awards take place on Friday

St. Paul’s Golden Gloves 40×20 Tournament in Belfast – Ladies Open Singles: Marianna Rushe (Coman’s) was the only Roscommon girl playing in this grade and it contained top players in World Champion Fiona Shannon and Aisling Reilly both from Belfast.   Marianna had a difficult draw. In the quarter final she beat former World doubles player Sibeal McKenna in straight games and then quickly into the semi final against the player many believe will be the next Irish Senior Champion Aisling Reilly. Reilly won the first game 21 17 and the Coman’s girl won the second 21 15. It had taken one hour and still with the tie-breaker to come. A good start by the Belfast girl but they were level at three points each. In the end Reilly won 11 8. 17 and under Singles (Golden Gloves): The top four 17 and under players in Ireland took part in this including two players who will play for a place on the USHA Juniors Irish team next Saturday in Mullingar. Leona Doolin of Coman’s and Louise Walshe of Kildare.    Leona Doolin beat Lorraine Havern (Down) and Hilary Rushe beat Avril McNamee of Donegal 21 15, 21 19. Shauna Hilley beat Stephanie Coleman (Ballaghaderreen) and Louise Walshe beat Marie Corrigan (Mayo).   The semi final results were as follows: Leona Doolin beat Hilary Rushe 21 17, 21 13 and S. Hilley beat Louise Walshe 2-0. In the final Shauna Hilley (Wicklow) beat Leona Doolin (Coman’s) 21 10, 21 14.   Leona Doolin’s next major event will be the USHA National Juniors Irish Trial final in Mullingar on Saturday. She plays Louise Walshe of Kildare. Connacht Handball Awards at Claremorris: Time now to dish out some Awards to twelve Handball people who have brought honour to Connacht Handball in 2006/07. This important event takes place at Claremorris this Friday. Roscommon have three people getting awards: Hall of Fame to Michael Nolan of Michael Glavey’s, Clooncan a man who has been part of Club, County and Connacht for years. Marianna Rushe of Coman’s gets the Senior Girls Award and Leona Doolin the Junior Girls Award.    Galway have Tony Audley of Moycullen and Frances Curran. Mayo Kevin Geraghty, Stephen Cooney and Dessie Keegan, Sligo Paddy Walshe and Leitrim Martin Logan. Ladies Intermediate 60×30 Singles All-Ireland final at Ballina: A marvellous challenge by Katie Costello (Coman’s) to the Senior Champion Ashley Prendiville of Kerry just fell short in a thrilling final at Ballina. Kerry won 21 19, 21 11. USHA Trials at Mullingar: The girls 177 and under and 19 and under semi’s and finals take place starting at noon at Mullingar on Saturday next the 3 rd November. Roscommon have two players taking part. In 19 and under P. Gallagher (Mayo) plays A. Reilly (Antrim). In 19 and under Ashley Prendiville of Kerry plays Marianna Rushe. In the 17 and under final Louise Walshe of Kildare plays Leona Doolin of Coman’s.
