With the General Election date set to be called within the next number of days, all the indications are that the HAC (Hospital Action Committee) will be absent from the ballot paper for the first time in twenty years. However the HAC continues to seek assurances on the County Hospital’s future from the main political parties and as such the group’s capacity to have an influence on the election remains. While a HAC spokesperson insisted this week that no final decision had yet been taken on whether or not they would run a candidate, it is widely believed that the HAC will not contest the upcoming election. The HAC spokesperson conceded that HAC support for an Independent candidate was ‘an option’ open to the group. The spokesperson indicated that final decisions on the HAC’s election plans are set to be taken in the coming days. Meanwhile, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny’s position on the future of Roscommon County Hospital has been communicated to the HAC by local Fine Gael Deputy Denis Naughten.
