A group of people from Ballaghaderreen were honoured by President Michael D. Higgins at a garden party at Áras an Uachtarain yesterday (Wednesday) for their work in helping asylum seekers and refugees.
The group was honoured for their efforts in helping dozens of residents at the Emergency Reception and Orientation Centre in the Abbeyfield Hotel in the Ballaghaderreen integrate into the local community.
President Higgins thanked all those involved before highlighting the talent and skills being brought to Ireland by asylum seekers and refugees. He called on the people of Ireland to help immigrants and added that there was a need to improve the direct provision system.
