John Kennedy and Leona Doolin are feted at the Roscommon Sports Partnership Awards – Ruby Oil Awards and Leona Doolin and Marianna Rushe win All-Ireland semi finals beating Kerry in minor singles and intermediate singles respectively and junior doubles, Diamond ‘A’ Doubles and Master ‘A’ Singles wins. Roscommon Sports Partnership-Ruby Oil Awards: Leona Doolin and John Kennedy were the two handballers who received Awards at the above function held at the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon, on Friday night last. Both are very worthy recipients and their records show the strength of handball in the county at two levels: Administration and Competition. Connacht Minor doubles final at Williamstown: The day before Leona Doolin donned her dancing shoes for the Sports Awards, she teamed up with Hilary Rushe to beat the strong partnership of Stephanie Coleman and Mary Duffy of Ballaghaderreen. It was close enough with the Roscommon pair tested all the way to 21 10, 21 15. All-Ireland Ladies semi finals at St. Comans: Comans hosted two All-Ireland ladies semi finals at 3pm last Wednesday. Kerry were the visitors to Comans. In the minor semi final Leona Doolin had to withstand on the sternest tests in her career against the talented Sharon Twomey from the BallyMacElliot Club. Roscommon won the first game 21 15. Sharon Twomey stormed back to take the second 21 18. Leona eventually won 21 14. In the intermediate Singles final Marianna Rushe of Comans beat Karen Lawlor of Kerry 21 8, 21 6. Connacht Juvenile ‘A’ Competitions at Ballinrobe: An alarming less than expected return for Roscommon from the Juvenile ‘A’ finals at Ballinrobe. In the boys only Colm Walshe and Gary Kelly won taking the U-13 doubles title with a hard luck defeat of Cian Connolly and Darren Beatty in U-16 doubles. All-Ireland Junior Doubles semi final at Liscarroll, Co. Cork: After several fine victories in the run up to the semi final Niall McGrath and Neil McGrath of Roscommon continued that success beating Michael Murphy and Donnacha O’Dea 19 21, 21 8, 21 18. Connacht Ladies Junor ‘B’ doubles final at Drumshambo: Linda Connolly and Laura Mannion (Roscommon) had a good win over Joanna Logan and Mary Shanley (Leitrim) winning 21 13, 21 15 in Junior ‘B’ doubles. Diamond ‘A’ Connacht doubles final at Lisacul: Noel Raftery and Pat Clarke (Lisacul Club) were on top of their form as they convincingly defeated Morgan Darcy and Peter Mulryan of Galway in the Connacht final at Lisacul 21 10, 21 7.
