Great progress in Athleague

Athleague is one of the region’s most picturesque villages. It nestles close to the thriving county town of Roscommon, resplendid in its quaintness and beauty, proud of its history – while facing the future with growing confidence.    It was, all told, a good year for Athleague. Once again the club excelled in sport, with the senior hurlers winning a second senior title in a row, following a rollercoaster campaign – they went on to narrowly lose out in the Connacht semi-final.    Athleague is making progress commercially too. Bernard Keane, who, with his wife Margaret runs the well-established SPAR premises in the village, welcomes the development.    ‘I don’t like to single out individuals or particular premises’ but you would have to say that what Aidan and Patricia Donnelly have done in extending Town & Country is a big boost to the village. It looks really well and will really enhance Athleague.    ‘Of course Henry Hamrock opened a Funeral Home during 2007 and that too adds to the village. All of the new housing is welcome too, while a major plus from the year was the work on the roadway from Athleague to Clooneen
