Roscommon Mens Section: President’s Prize:The semi finals and final of the President’s Prize (Mrs Helen Sweeney) took place in beautiful weather this week. In the first semi final Francis Ferguson beat John Walker and in the second semi final Louis O’Doherty beat Brian Feeley. The final took place on Sunday and playing fantastic golf off a handicap of 19, Francis Ferguson was the winner. This was the first ‘Major’ for Francis who thanked Louis in his victory speech for his sportsmanship throughout the final. Louis O’Doherty, a ‘major’ winner in the past, praised the victor, Francis, for his fine golf  throughout the whole competition.    The President, Mrs Sweeney, who was accompanied at the presentation by her family, laid on a great evening of music, food and drink. In her speech she made special mention of the great work being done with youth golf and hoped that many more young people get involved. The President also proposed having a scramble competition every Friday evening during the Summer months and details will be worked out in the next couple of weeks.   The President’s Prize to juniors was won by Cathal Gunn who shot a 67. Cathal also recently came second in the Mullingar Intermediate Scratch Cup also with a 67.   The President’s Prize final was preceded by a nine hole scramble and the winners were Nicky Scanlon, Mairead Scanlon and Mary O’Gara. In second place were Peter Brady, Bob McCormack and Clement McCormack   Club Competition: The draw for the club mixed foursomes is now on the noticeboard. The club was successful in three interclub competitions this week. The Pierce Purcell team beat Castlerea. The Club Seniors beat Dunmore and the Club Mixed team also beat Dunmore. Details of the next round of these competitions will be given in next weeks notes.   Open Week commences on Thursday 19th June and timesheets for all 11 days are now up. Ladies Section: The results of 9 hole competitions held over Bank Holiday Weekend are: Sunday 1st June. 1st Rosemary O’Brien 20 points and 2nd Margaret Brennan 19 Points. Monday 2nd June. 1st Sheila Fallon 21 points and 2nd June Halliday 19 Points.  The 18 Hole competition on Tuesday the 3rd was sponsored by McNally Motors and the overall winner was Ruth Lennon with 71 nett. Category A was won by Jackie Maxwell with 73 nett, Category B winner was Mary Mellett with 74 nett and Category C was won by Claire Keane with 79 nett.    In the first leg of the 3rd round of the AA Insurance Golf Championships Senior Foursomes against Galway and which was played in Galway, Roscommon took one match which looks promising for the return match which will be in Roscommon later this month. Congratulations to the mixed team who progress to the next round after beating Dunmore 3 matches to one. The Junior Foursomes team have it all to do in the return match against Boyle later this month as Boyle won all three matches in their home venue. However on past performance they should rise to the challenge. Carrick-on-Shannon The Voucher or ‘Free Sub’ played last Sunday saw another large entry for this, the unofficial 3rd ‘major’ of the season. There was also Golfer of the Year points up for grabs in this the first GOY competition. Niall Roche took the honors with a great score of 63. Friday 9 hole competition, please note these competitions are now qualifying rounds and as result there will be a CSS and point 1’s are available. Timesheet online @ .   The very popular International Pairs 4 Ball Competition is running again this year. Qualifying through June, July & August play any day with best qualifying score recorded going onto the All-Ireland final held this year in Knightsbrook in Co. Meath.   Another mixed week on the Inter Club scene where we won one and lost one. The win came courtesy of the Mixed Foursome team who beat Co. Sligo 4-1, we now face Boyle in the next round. This will be our 5th game versus Boyle this season where we have lost all games, this makes Boyle firm favourites as they have 3 games at home. Our loss this week came in the Inter Club Seniors against Boyle where we lost 3-2, losing 2 away and one at home.      The Home team of Albert Hogg & Peter Maye won by the dog licence 7/6, PJ Sharkey & Frank McGrath lost 4/3. Away Atty Hynes lost 1 down. Leo Mulvey & Sean Gilmartin won 2up, Tommie Kenoy & Sean Murray lost  3/2. Matches this week Monday last Jimmy Bruen Zone final v Strandhill away.
