Golf News – 2nd October

Boyle Golf Club

Well done to Brendan & Susan Gaffney who were presented with the Boyle Motor Works Cup last Sunday evening following their win in the Boyle Motor Works Mixed Foursomes.

The full results were – 1st Brendan & Susan Gaffney, 2nd Patrick Egan & Claire Cryan, 3rd John McGuinn & Paula Cull. Last Sunday’s 18-hole sponsored by Conor Dowling and Deirdre O’Reilly was won by Tommy King with a score of 62. 2nd was Jim Mooney (63), Gross winner was Gary Carty, 3rd was Pat Conroy (65).

The result saw Gary Carty crowned ‘Golfer of the Year 2015’ for the second year running with Charlie O’Donnell 2nd and Jim Mooney 3rd. The weekly 9-hole was won by Pat Conroy with 20 points followed closely by Charlie O’Donnell on 19 points.

The Winter League commences this week and can be played between Thursday and Sunday. The weekly 9-hole will run from Monday to Sunday for the next three weeks.

The outing to Portumna Golf Club takes place on Saturday. Cost is €40 per person including golf, meal and prizes.

Best of luck to the ladies who play in the Roscommon Cup on Saturday October 3rd.

In other news, the men’s, ladies’ & management monthly meetings take place on Wednesday, October 7th.

Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club

Ladies: Open Day every Tuesday. The great weather, Brenda’s organisational skills, the teams taking part and the wonderful meal served by the Bunker Bar all made Saturday’s Nine and Dine great fun.

Well done to the winning team of Martina Gallagher, Ger Farry and Teresa Kenoy. Second place went to Hillary Collins, Ger Prendiville and Kathleen Cox.

Lidl Garvey and Lynch Cups: Play your third round this week if you get a chance, as the weather forecast looks good. The deadline for the third round is October 10th.

Congratulations from all of us in Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club to Joe and Rosie Dolan on winning the Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year Award for 2016. 


Winter Alliance: The Captains for this year’s alliance are Frances Molloy and Mary Molloy. The Alliance will run on the first Saturday of every month, starting on November 7th. The Ladies AGM will be held on Friday, October 9th at 8 pm. 


Castlerea Golf Club

The results of this week’s Men’s Competition, sponsored by Silke’s Bar, are as follows – 1st: John Caulfield, 62; 2nd: Michael Mulligan, 64; Cat. 1: Kieran Rosney, 67; Cat. 2: Paul Connaughton, 65; Cat. 3: Johnny Mahoney, 67.

Next Sunday’s competition is sponsored by Kelly Henry Medical Centre and the Ladies competition which takes place on Tuesday, 4th of October is sponsored by Keith Revins.

The winners of the girls and boys section of the Ladies Captain’s Prize for Juniors were Rachel Mulligan and Jack McDonnell respectively.

Roscommon Golf Club

Congratulations to Peter Geraghty, winner of President Cathal McConn’s Prize 2015 and hard luck to runner-up Paul Hoare.

The presentation of prizes took place in a packed clubhouse on Saturday night. Captain Ken Kearney introduced President Cathal McConn and outlined his outstanding contribution to the club and his promotion of the game through his involvement in the Connacht branch of the G.U.I.

He spoke of the great honour for the club when Cathal was appointed as Irish Boys Captain, a position which he is carrying out with distinction. In his presidential address Cathal complimented the wonderful work which all the representatives on the various committees are doing for the club.

He said that he was particularly proud that Roscommon is one of the few clubs where the membership has grown in recent years. Cathal gave special mention to Ian Gannon and the course staff on the fantastic work which they are doing in keeping the course in top class condition.

He also praised Bryan Keogh and his staff for the wonderful service which they are providing to the members.

The winner of Sunday’s competition, sponsored by Hynes Pharmacy, was Michael Connaughton with 40 points. Jack Sharkey finished in second place with 38 points. Brian Feeley won the gross prize with 29 points and Michael Costello was in third place with 37 points.

Margaret Egan won the ladies’ 9-hole competition with 20 points (back 6) and Patricia Donnelly was in second place with 20 points also.

The winner of the ladies’ Tuesday competition, sponsored by Satara Boutique, was Joan Hannon with 36 points. Yvonne Waldron was in second place with 33 points. Bertie Fallon was the winner of the Over 55’s competition on Thursday. Michael Brennan was in second place and Jim Tunney was in third place.

Mary Pender won the ladies’ competition and Kay Ruane was in second place. Madeline Daly was in third place and Margaret Egan was in fourth place. There is an Open Over 55’s competition on Thursday and the usual Open Friday competition.

Believe it or not the first of the Christmas Hamper competitions (Mixed), sponsored by Barr An Raille, takes place on Sunday.
