ROSCOMMON Easter weekend was busy on the golfing front with the last competitions on the full 18 hole course prior to the construction of nine new greens and other alterations which have commenced. Full details of the work will be announced this week. On Sunday 23rd March the competition was an 18 hole single stroke sponsored by McGuinness Pharmacy, Main Street, Roscommon. The winner was Tommy Fallon with 69. Second was Michael Connaughton with 70 and in third place was Tom Hanley also with 70. The gross was won by Noel Lawlor with 77. On Easter Monday an 18 hole stableford competition sponsored by Roscommon Furniture, Athlone Road, Roscommon was won by Pat Farnon with 39 points. Second was Charlie Farrell with 38 points and in third place was Eddie Naughton with 38 points. The gross winner was Ken Kearney with 32 points. The Winter League sponsored by John J Ward Hardware, Roscommon is reaching its final stages. The first semi final has now been completed with the team comprising Barry Hoban, John Cunningham and J T Finn reaching the final. Their opponents in the final will be known this week. Coaching for boys, both beginners and non-beginners will commence on Friday 18th April from 4pm to 6pm, and will take place every Friday during the year. Coaching will be given by PGA professional David Byrne. More details are available on the notice board. Coaching for girls commenced on during the Easter Holidays and continues this Wednesday 26th March at 11am. Full details of the girls coaching programme will be announced next week. The draw has been made for the Presidents Prize and a huge entry has been received. The preliminary round matches have to be completed by 10th April and first round matches have to be completed by 24th April. The next training day in the use of the new defibrillator equipment is Thursday 27th March. Training will take place in the clubhouse from 7pm to 10pm. Further training will take place on Saturday 29th March and Saturday 5th April. Full details are available on the noticeboard in the clubhouse. On Sunday 23rd March a 9 hole stableford competition for ladies was won by Maddy Daly with 19 points who won on a countback from Jackie Maxwell. On Easter Monday the 18 hole stableford open competition, sponsored by John Keane & Sons, Roscommon, was won by Bernie Burke with 41 points. In second place was Sinead Benedetti with 40 points and in third place was Maureen Browne from Longford with 38 points. The gross prize was won by Ruth Lennon with 28 points. The nine hole competition on Tuesday 18th March was won by Mary Pender with 21 points. In second place was Marie Benedetti with 20 points. On Sunday 30th March the competition is a Men’s Singles sponsored by Bestquote. The timesheet is now on the noticeboard.
