Roscommon The first 18-hole competition of the year, sponsored by John Corcoran Menswear, Church Street, Roscommon was held on Sunday 2nd March. The winner was John Doyle with 42 points who just pipped Barry Hoban who also had 42 points, on a count back. In third place with 41 points was Francis Ferguson. The winner of the gross prize was Jim Tunney with 31 points. The men’s winter league quarterfinals, which have to be played before 10th March, are now taking place. The ladies winter league has reached the semi final stage and the draw is on display on the noticeboard. The entry sheet for next Sunday’s competition, sponsored by Roscommon Furniture, is now on the board. The entry sheet for the President’s, Helen Sweeney, prize is now also on the noticeboard and members are urged to put their names down as soon as possible. Preparations are well advanced to commence construction work on nine new greens on the course. It is expected that contracts will be signed during the coming week, with work commencing straight away. Ken Kearney Golf Design is carrying out the design work. The final design will be on display in the clubhouse in the next few days. The club wishes to assure all golf societies and golf classics as well as visitors that the course will be fully playable during all stages of the construction of the new greens. There is very little between the teams from the first round of matches and teams are hoping to surge ahead with this round before the singles which are to be played on the 5th April between 10.30 am and 1.30 p.m. On Wednesday 26th March at 8 pm there will be a ‘Handicap and Rules of golf night’. This is not just for beginners but should be of great interest to all members. In particular the changes in the ILGU handicapping system will be explained.
