Roscommon Captains’ Drive-In at Roscommon: The highlight of the golfing week at Roscommon Golf Club was the Captains’ Drive-In, which was held on Sunday 24th February. Men’s Captain Darren Burgoyne was joined by lady Captain Linda Maxwell and Club President Helen Sweeney on the first tee where they played the first official shots of the golfing year. The drive-in was followed by a 9-hole scramble, sponsored by Gleeson’s Townhouse Restaurant, The Square, Roscommon, which had a very large entry. Prizes were awarded for the first and second nine. Winners of the 1st 9 were three members of the Hill family, Robert Hill, his daughter Aisling and son David. A final hole birdie by Aisling secured the prize for the Hill’s. Winners of the second nine were Michael and Clare Keane and Carol O’Donnell. Following the drive-in and competition a very enjoyable prize giving ceremony and social evening took place in the clubhouse, where members were delighted to avail of the food and drink served up by new bar and restaurant manager Tom Nagle and his team. The men’s winter league has reached the ¼ final stage and details of the individual matches, which have to be played by Monday 10th March are on the notice board in the clubhouse. The first of two defibrillators, which have been purchased by the club, has now been installed in the clubhouse with the second due to be installed out on the course during the coming week. Training on the use of the defibrillator will be given over the next few weeks and details of these training evenings will be posted on the notice board in the clubhouse. The first 18-hole competition of the year, sponsored by John Corcoran Menswear Church Street Roscommon, will take place on Sunday 2nd March. The timesheet is on display in the clubhouse. Ladies: Results of the 9 hole competition on Tuesday 19 th February: 1 st Mary Gilleran 20 points, 2 nd Mary Finneran 20 points. There was a great turn out for the ‘Drive In’ on Sunday 24 th which was followed by a 3 person scramble with a ‘shot gun’ start. The winners of the front 9 hole competition were Robert, Aisling and David Hill and the winners of the back 9 hole competition were Claire Keane, Michael Keane and Carol O’Donnell. It is intended to have an ‘Information Night’ on Rules of Golf and also details of the ILGU handicapping system because of the recent changes introduced. At a recent meeting of the Ladies Committee votes of sympathy were passed to families of the late Florence Henchy who was Lady Captain of the club in 1959 and Mona Molloy who was Lady Captain in 1961.
