Roscommon Competitions at Roscommon Golf Club have begun again for the 2008 season. In the men’s 16 hole stableford competition Michael Dolan won with a terrific score of 41 points. In second place was Peter Geraghty with 40 points and the gross prize was won by Brian Feeley. In the Ladies Tuesday 9 hole stableford competition the winner was Laura Fryday with 20 points and in second place was Mary Lalor also with 20 points. Laura won on a countback. The Captain’s Drive-In takes place on Sunday, 24th February at 1.45 pm. Men’s Captain Darren Burgoyne and Ladies Captain Linda Maxwell will start off what promises to be a very exciting year for Roscommon Golf Club, when it is proposed to embark on a major redevelopment of nine of the eighteen holes on the course. Full details of this development, which will cause only minor disruption to the course during construction work will be announced in the next few weeks. Following the drive-in a nine hole scramble will take place after which members can sample the food and drink in the clubhouse where the bar is now under new management. The club wishes to express its sympathy to the family of the late Bill Finn who died recently. Bill was a past Captain of Roscommon Golf Club and was a member of the successful Pierce Purcell Shield team for the club. Ladies: The official start of the golfing year for Roscommon Golf Club gets underway at 1.45 p.m. on Sunday 24 th February with the ‘Drive in’ for the Men’s and Lady’s Captains and the President and this will be followed by a Scramble competition for all members. A large turn out is expected. Now that the weather has improved the Winter League participants are feverishly trying to return improved cards. Although there are a few teams with very good scores the competition is still wide open for teams to come from behind and qualify for the match play stage. The new Spring match play competition is also underway and proving very interesting with some strong team combinations. The format for the first round of the competition is Foursomes. Results of the 9 hole competition on Tuesday 12 th :- 1 st Laura Grehan 20 points and 2 nd Mary Lalor 20 points.
