Golf: Lucan forward to All-Irelands!

We start our weekly golf round in Roscommon where the Senior Foursomes team of Sinead Benedetti, Mary Lalor, Ruth Lennon, Ciara Ryan, Paula Quinn and Rosemary O’Brien is due to tee-off in the All-Ireland Finals at Malone Golf Club at 11 am today (Thursday).

The team, which is led by Linda Maxwell and Noreen O’Grady, will open their campaign against Lucan Golf Club (a lovely suburb in West Dublin which produces extremely talented people I’m told!) Best of luck to Roscommon!

Last Sunday’s men’s competition was won by James Quigley with 40 points while Francie Noone and Martin Daly finished in second and third place respectively on 38. Michael Connaughton took the gross while Fionn Hoare took the junior prize.

Meanwhile, Jim Finn took last week’s men’s senior’s competition with 21 points while Ann McNallly was best of the ladies.

The machinery fundraising draw takes place this Saturday (30th) at the clubhouse and the total prize value is €750 so all support is appreciated.

Last week’s ladies’ competition in Castlerea was won by Kathy Burke with 39 points while Valerie Callaghan finished two points behind in second place.

Liam Walshe was best of the men with 40 points, just pipping second place Des Glynn to top spot. Cat. 1: Dara Bruen (37), Cat. 2: Alan Devine (36) and Cat. 3: Johnny Mahony (39).

To Athlone, where Lady Captain Noirin is gearing up for an away day at Galway Bay Golf Club. It promises to be a great day out!

At home, Michael Cunniffe won last week’s gent’s competition with 36 points while Jean McGowan took the ladies’ competition also with 36 points.

Other recent winners include J Burns (AWGS), Tom Browne (Plumbers), Michael Coen (Plumbers) and Bernadette McDonnell (9-Hole).

Our final stop is Dunshaughlin in Co. Meath where Roscommon golfers competed at the recent inter-county competition held at Black Bush Golf Club. The evening was organised by former Roscommon Gaels player Gerry Flanagan and attracted players from almost every county. The event raised €10,500 for Gerry Kelly Cancer Support Centre in Drogheda.

Pictured (above) are: Back row (L-r): Declan Farrell (Church St.), Derek Thompson (St. Faithleach’s), Oliver Harrington (Boyle), Ciaran McCormack (Ballinagare), John Newton (former Roscommon Senior), Sean Tiernan (Kilmore) and John Hogan.
