We start our weekly golf round in Castlerea where the recent Ladies’ Gala Day was an outstanding success with over 50 players from home and neighbouring clubs participating. Teresa Meaney was the winner with 43 points, just ahead of Fen Thompson with 42. Teresa also won last week’s ladies’ competition with 37 points.
There were mixed fortunes for Castlerea’s men’s teams with defeat to Loughrea in the All-Ireland 4ball competition and victory over Roscommon in round 1 of the Jimmy Bruen competition last weekend.
Tonight (Thursday), Castlerea take on Athlone in the first round of the Pierce Purcell competition.
Onto Athlone where the men’s Jimmy Bruen team beat Mountbellew last weekend.
Meanwhile, Bill McMickan won the recent gent’s competition while Eoin McGrath, M Tallon and Michael Healy were winners in recent Wednesday competitions.
Anne Egan Farrell and Nuala Hamilton won the recent Australian Spoons Competition with 37 points.
To Roscommon next and news of the ladies’ Connacht Senior Cup win at Castlebar last Sunday. The team saw off Galway Golf Club, Galway Bay Golf Club and Ballinasloe Golf Club and can be rightly proud of their achievement. They will compete in the All-Ireland Final at The Royal Curragh Golf Club.
Closer to home and Michael Healy won last Sunday’s men’s competition ahead of Cathal McConn. Elsewhere, Mary Seymour was victorious in the ladies’ competition.
Finally for this week, we go to Boyle Golf Club where last Sunday’s Bart Moran Trophy was won by Pat Conroy with a score of 64, which gave Pat a two shot win over Jim Dwyer.
The ladies Niamh Nangle Cup was won by Marie Hanmore Cawley with Ruth Hogg in second and Paula Cull in third.
Last Thursday’s men’s competition, meanwhile, was won by Sean Heslin with 24 points.
