Congratulations to Glen Celtic who were crowned the new Roscommon & District League Masters champions following a 1-0 win at Glenamaddy on Saturday evening. The Glenamaddy side went unbeaten in seven league games and have the title wrapped up before their last game against Baylough Rvs. when they will be presented with the trophy. Liam Quinn is their leading goalscorer with eight and Martin Hegarty chipped in with seven. Other members to impress throughout the campaign were Paddy McHugh, Tom Cunningham, Terence Morgan, Thomas Hussey, David Brady and Gerry Carmody. The idea of running a masters league was first mooted by the Glen Celtic Club and the competition has proved to be a big success as all the games were played in a very sporting manner. After the games players who may not have met for a number of years have the chance to get together and reminisce about previous sporting occasions. Congratulations to Damon Kearney who was a member of the Irish soccer team that played in the European Championships for deaf and hard of hearing. The Irish team finished third overall and Damon received the award for the best Goalkeeper of the tournament. In a penalty shoot-out in their last game against Germany Damon saved two penalty kicks. He comes from Castleruby and played all his underage football for the Castleplunkett side C.P. Ajax. He has the distinction of being the only player to play for three seasons on the Roscommon & District league representative side in the national Kennedy cup competition. He later went on to play for Longford Town and at just nineteen years of age he has a bright future as a goalkeeper. Well done Damon. * The Roscommon & District League wish to extend their sympathy the Nolan family from Ballinagare on the tragic death of young Stephen Nolan. Stephen played with the Castleplunkett side at under age and later with his brothers he played for Ballinagare F.C. he was a most likeable young player and his sudden death left many people in a complete state of shock. The members of the Roscommon & District League extend their deepest sympathy to his father and mother, Sean and Shiela and to his brothers, sisters and extended family. May he rest in peace.
