Club members at Glen Celtic FC this week launched a fundraising initiative to provide funds for a new astro turf facility for the club. The initiative is a draw with €50 tickets and a range of prizes, including a top prize of a new Renault Megane. The draw will be made in Glenamaddy on January 6 th next. Glen Celtic has progressed a long way still it was established in 1977. Though the history and roots of the are strong, club members continue to strive to put in place additional facilities. In 1998 the club focused on obtaining a new home and took on the major task of purchasing land and creating its own stage. A piece of land was purchased adjacent to St Patrick’s Church and plans were put in place to provide a playing pitch, training pitch and dressing rooms. Extensive work was completed on the grounds and a wall and fencing erected to define the boundaries. The resulting pitch ensured that Glen Celtic has one of the best surfaces in the Roscommon and District League. Extensive work began on the dressing rooms with extensive shower facilities and referees’ room completed. In 2006 the club took up the challenge of erecting floodlighting on its main pitch, to provide the opportunity for junior and youth teams to play matches at night-time. After months of preparation the project finally went ahead in September 2006 and in early December the first competitive match under floodlights took place. Since that night floodlights have been used for a vast amount of games. The next project is the installation of an astro turf facility which can be used by both members and other groups throughout the year. Once again the Club is confident of successfully completing this extremely expensive project within the next twelve months, with the help and support of local people. Fancy a new car for 2008?
