Connacht U-14 Girls Cup Final: Creggs 45 Connemara 0. Creggs U-14 Girls won their first ever Connacht Girls Cup last Sunday at The Sportsground in Galway.
Creggs opened the scoring after eight minutes when Sarah Purcell gathered the ball from a Connemara clearance and broke through the defence to touch down under the posts, which Siofra Hession converted for a 7-0 lead.
Connemara employed a kicking game in the first half and from one of their clearances Roisin Maher was stopped just short of the line following a powerful run. Eabha Dowd picked up and dived in from close-range which Siofra Hession again converted for a 14-0 half-time lead.
The second half began with Connemara on the attack but the Creggs defence stood firm and after ten minutes they increased their lead to 21-0 after a second try for Sarah Purcell which Eabha Dowd converted.
That score seemed to take the fight out of Connemara and Creggs capitalised with further tries from Roisin Maher (2), Siofra Hession and a third for Sarah Purcell.
There were wild celebrations among the Creggs players and supporters at the final whistle. For a lot of this squad, it was their first year playing rugby and it is great credit to the girls ho went through the Connacht league and cup campaigns unbeaten this season.
To add to what has been a wonderful week, the girls will play at half-time in the Ireland v France Women’s International in Dublin on Saturday. A well-deserved day out for team of champions!
