Assaults which occurred in Strokestown and Athlone in recent days are being investigated by Gardai. A youth was assaulted in Strokestown in the early hours on Sunday morning at about 2.30 am. The youth suffered head injuries and Gardai say that they are following a definite line of enquiry. Another youth was assaulted, at Elphin Street, Strokestown on St. Patrick’s Day at approximately 7.30 pm. The youth was stopped on the street by a number of other youths and he received a number of blows to his head and face. Anyone who may have seen anything in the general Elphin Street area between 7.15 pm and 7.45 pm on St. Patrick’s night is asked to contact the Gardai in Strokestown or Roscommon Town (090-6638300). Meanwhile Gardai in Athlone are investigating two serious assaults which took place in the town in recent days. Firstly, on Sunday night a 21-year-old man was the victim of a serious assault which took place in the Garrycastle area at approximately 8.30 pm. Then on St. Patrick’s Night (Monday) a youth was the victim of a serious assault at Kilmacoo Lane in the town. Both men were taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe. Gardai in Athlone are appealing to the public for information on either of the attacks. Contact 090-6498550.
