Brendan Gaffney added another major victory at Boyle Golf Club recently when he took Captain Ross Andrew’s prize last Sunday. This was Brendan’s second major victory as he added to his win in the 2015 edition of the event.
In Roscommon, T. O’Farrell won last Sunday’s men’s competition with 40 points ahead of N Sharkey on 39. Meanwhile, the Jimmy Bruen team were beaten by Athenry in the Connacht Final in Ballinrobe last weekend.
Over in Castlerea, Maura Kelly took last week’s ladies’ McGuire Cup competition with 70 points ahead of Mary Colleary on 71. This week the club plays host to it’s Annual Golf Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
To Carrick-on-Shannon next where Michael ‘The Barber’ Masterson cut his way through the well-trimmed fairways and greens to win Damien Duignan’s captain’s prize recently. The Barber (167.5) won it by a hair’s breadth from Tommy Aherne (168.5). Nathan Flynn took gross with 192 and Gordon Kavanagh finished third with 171.5. Rumour has it that Michael had a fiver on himself at 100/1 and has donated €100 back to the club!
Athlone’s Pierce Purcell team were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Gort in the Connacht semi-final last Saturday. Meanwhile, Evelyn Wright took the ladies’ open last Saturday with 37 points ahead of Kay Delaney on 35.
