Roscommon Gaels’ excellent season continued last weekend when they defeated Oran by a point in a very tight match in Athleague.

This latest victory for Ronan O’Meara’s team means that they will qualify for the quarter-finals alongside Oran, St Dominic’s and the winner of the clash between Pádraig Pearses and Tremane. Athleague and Four Roads will contest the semi-finals.

The Gaels sowed the seeds of victory in an impressive first half display. Goals from Chris Duignan and Jack Fleming helped them to a 2-8 to 0-5 interval lead.

But Oran were much better on the resumption and they nibbled away at the deficit. With four minutes left, Cathal Kenny scored a fine goal to level the scores but the town team finished well and Brendan Quinn knocked over a priceless winner in injury-time. Final score: Roscommon Gaels 2-14 Oran 1-16.

In the second game of the weekend, Pádraig Pearses slumped to another defeat as St Dominic’s prevailed by three points (1-16 to 1-13). A Mickey Joe Egan goal gave Dominic’s an early advantage but Pearses dug in and were very competitive in what was a disappointing match. David Sweeney got in for Pearses’ goal midway through the first half and there was only a point in it at half-time.

St Dominic’s were slightly the better side throughout the second half and Mickey Joe Egan was in sparkling form from the placed ball, scoring 1-13 of his side’s total. Pearses will now have one last chance to save their season when they play Tremane in two weeks’ time.
