GAA coaching corner

  U14 coaching session On this Thursday evening, August 16th in Kilbride GAA Park a coaching session will take place for all players on the County U14 football development panel at 7 pm sharp, a full turn out of players is expected.   U14 football squad defeat Leitrim Our two U14 football development squads defeated Leitrim in two games last week in Kilbride, it was great to see 39 players togged out with some more away on holidays and in the Gaeltacht. In the first game Roscommon won by 1-20 to 4-6 and in the second match Roscommon also won by 3-14 to 1-11. Well done to all the boys who wore the County jersey for the first time.   U14 football squads play Longford One of the Roscommon U14 development football squads will play Longford on this Saturday morning in Longford at 11 am. The players will be told on this Thursday evening at training in Kilbride about the arrangements. The other Roscommon squad will play Longford on Saturday September 1st at a Roscommon venue. There is also the possibility that both squads will be playing Westmeath in two games on Wednesday evening week August 22nd in Athlone, that has to be confirmed with Westmeath.   U15 squad lose to Sligo Also last week our two U15 football squad travelled to Curry in Sligo to take on the home side in two matches which were both won by Sligo.   Hurling blitz in Mullingar This year’s All Ireland U16 hurling inter-county blitz day is Saturday August 25th in Mullingar. The event will be run on the same format as the Tony Forester U14 competition. 12 teams will take part including Roscommon. The line up is as follows, Kerry, Roscommon, Mayo, Down, Derry, Armagh, Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, Wicklow, Carlow and Laois. Roscommon are in the same group as Carlow, Kildare and Down.   VHI Cul Camps numbers We have held our five weeks of camps to complete this year’s programme and despite the poor weather, the numbers attending our football and hurling camps have being excellent and they are as follows, Dr Hyde football (168), Abbey Park Boyle (83), St. Dominic’s hurling (78), Dr Hyde Park football (171), Elphin football (106), Four Roads hurling (71), Padraig Pearses football (115), Tarmonbarry football (89), Dr Hyde Park hurling (105), Castlerea football (81) and Padraig Pearses hurling (46) and Ballinlough (29). We thank the venues who have allowed us hold the camps, along with Roscommon Community College who allowed us to use their facilities at short notice during the first week. We hope all the kids attending our camps enjoyed themselves with the new GAA kits going down very well.   History made in Monksland Roscommon coaching and games development in association with the Roscommon Sports Partnership Board held their first ever GAA football camp in Monkland last week, where up on 50 boys and girls attended from 6 to 13 years of age and a very enjoyable week was had by all and we thank the residents committee for all their help as well.   U14 football development squad training in Kilbride Roscommon coaching and games development County U14 football squad coaching session will continue for all players on the squad on Tuesday, August 21st in Kilbride at 7 pm sharp. All Players must bring their own water and fruit to the sessions. Keep up the good works lads with the commitment and dedication shown so far.   Coaching DVDs for Sale The Roscommon Coaching and Games Development have some excellent coaching DVDs for sale from their coaching workshops held over the past few months, coaching the tackle with Des Newton, fitness with the ball by Mickey McGeehan, forward play by Martin McHugh and a coaching session with All Ireland winning Kerry manager Jack O’Connor. All DVDs cost 10 Euro and can be purchased from Games Manager Willie Hegarty at the Roscommon GAA County Board Office or by contacting coaching officer Seamus Sweeney.
