Funding has been allocated to progress preparatory and planning work for the redevelopment of Roscommon Courthouse.
The Courts Service has confirmed that funding is in place for work necessary to inform the business case for the future development of the historic courthouse, although a figure for the allocation has not been published.
The courthouse in Roscommon town has been closed since December 2022 due to health and safety concerns, with court sittings subsequently moved to temporary accommodation at the former Fairyland Ballroom on Racecourse Road.
The temporary facility has attracted criticism over issues including its single courtroom, limited parking and facilities for court users.
The need for improved courthouse facilities in Roscommon has been included in the National Development Plan, and the Courts Service has said it remains committed to the future development of the courthouse.
The latest funding represents an initial step towards establishing the scope and cost of a potential refurbishment.
