Fuerty hang on to clinch double

Connaughton Fuels AFL Division Two (O’Gara Cup) Final: Fuerty 2-10 Michael Glavey’s 2-9

A scoring burst which yielded 2-4 without reply just before half-time was key as Fuerty added the O’Gara Cup to the Intermediate championship that they won earlier in the year at Mulhern Park last Sunday.

Early points from Stephen Comer and Cathal Heneghan saw Glavey’s start well and when Gary Patterson slotted home a penalty in the tenth minute, they were well in control. But once Fuerty got motoring they took over. Gearoid Ennis scored a superb goal in the 13th minute and when Eamon Bannon fisted the ball over the Glavey’s line in the 21st minute the home side led by 2-5 to 1-5 at half-time.

The sides matched each other point for point on the resumption until the final ten minutes which saw the contest end in a welter of excitement and controversy. With six minutes to go, Niall Keenan saw red for Fuerty with his side three points ahead.

As the game went into time added on Glavey’s were level when Andy Glennon scored a fine team goal for the visitors. Then Aengus Lyons kicked what proved to be the winning point for the home side before a melee broke out and it resulted in no less than four red cards being shown by referee Declan Hunt as Pete Kellehan and Robbie Fallon of Fuerty and David Freyne and Conor Hussey were all shown the line. There were five more minutes of play but Fuerty held out for a historic win.
