Former Roscommon footballer Frankie Dolan is among the candidates being considered for the vacant Longford senior football manager’s position.
Longford GAA has confirmed that Dolan is one of a number of candidates it hopes to meet over the coming days as the county continues its search for a successor to Mike Solan.
Dolan revealed that he had already been contacted about the position but had put any discussions on hold while his Abbeylara side remained involved in the Longford Senior Football Championship.
Abbeylara’s championship campaign came to an end at the weekend when they suffered a 1-21 to 0-12 semi-final defeat to defending champions Killoe.
Speaking to Shannonside Sport following the game, Dolan confirmed that he now intends to engage with Longford over the vacancy.
The former Roscommon forward has considerable knowledge of the Longford club scene, having managed Abbeylara since 2024. He guided the club to the Longford senior title in his first year in charge, ending an almost 20-year wait for the championship.
Dolan also recently stepped away from Oisín McConville’s Wicklow senior management team.
He had been part of the Wicklow backroom team since late 2024 and helped the Garden County claim the Tailteann Cup earlier this year following a dramatic final victory over Down at Croke Park.
As a player, Dolan was a key figure for Roscommon and St Brigid’s. He won a Connacht Senior Football Championship medal with Roscommon in 2001 and famously kicked the winning point as St Brigid’s defeated Ballymun Kickhams to claim the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship title in 2013.
He has subsequently built up extensive club-management experience, including spells with St Brigid’s, Roscommon Gaels, Rosemount, Doon and Abbeylara.
Longford are seeking a new manager following Mike Solan’s decision to step down in August after two seasons in charge. Solan guided the county to promotion from Division Four of the National Football League earlier this year.
Longford GAA has appointed a seven-person committee to oversee the recruitment process and has been considering nominations and expressions of interest for the position.
Dolan is expected to be among a number of candidates interviewed as that process continues.
