Four Roads inspired by four goals in nine minutes

Under 14 ‘A’ Camogie Final Four Roads 4-0 Padraig Pearses 0-2 Four Roads captured the Roscommon under 14 ‘A’ camogie championship in a dramatic county final that was held in Four Roads last Saturday afternoon.   A nine-minute second half purple patch that yielded four goals for the home team secured the victory and obliterated Padraig Pearses’ first half lead. Two goals from Sarah Kelly, and a goal each from Linda Carty and Laura Fitzmaurice sealed the victory for Four Roads, who are worthy county champions.   The post-match trip to Woodmount was surely a melancholy journey for Padraig Pearses. They were unquestionably predominant in the first half. Pearses’ players and mentors will feel this week that they allowed the game to slip from their grasp.   Padraig Pearses began very well and, with Erica Greene. Shauna Ward, and Chloe Clogher leading their defence, they dominated at midfield in the opening minutes. It must be said, to give Four Roads due credit, that the strong wind was a major factor. Danielle Kenny opened the scoring for Padraig Pearses with a good point and Niamh Ryan doubled the lead with a commanding point towards the end of the half.   Four Roads, encouraged on and coordinated skilfully by their tactically astute manager, took the game to Padraig Pearses in the second half. Ten minutes in their efforts were rewarded when Linda Carty raised the first green flag of the match with a tremendous goal from 25 metres.    Four Roads were in the lead, and they followed this up with goals from Sarah Kelly and Laura Fitzmaurice. Padraig Pearses responded with several frantic attacking forays, in which Mary Grehan was prominent, but Four Roads sealed the victory and the championship with a goal from Sarah Kelly five minutes from time.
