Former Fine Gael TD, Senator and Councillor John Connor sadly passed away on Saturday following a road traffic accident in Co Roscommon.

Shortly before 2 pm on Saturday Gardaí and emergency services responded to a single-vehicle collision on a local road in the Frenchpark area.

Mr Connor, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

John Connor was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the 1981 general election as a Fine Gael TD for the Roscommon-East Galway constituency and, although he lost his seat in 1982, he was re-elected in 1989 and again in 1992.

He became a Senator in 1983 after being nominated by Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald. It was a post which he held until 1989. He was re-elected to the Seanad in 1997 (serving until 2002).

The late John Connor will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his sisters Margaret (Cady) and Anne (Gallagher), further relatives, neighbours and many friends.

He will repose in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Frenchpark on Wednesday from 5 pm until 7.30 pm.

Removal from the Funeral Home on Thursday to St Asicus’ Church, Frenchpark, arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 11.30 am, followed by interment in Cloonshanville cemetery.
