In a notable shift for the Roscommon political landscape, Michael Fitzmaurice, Independent TD for Roscommon-Galway, has aligned with Independent Ireland, a new political entity recently co-founded by Independent TDs Michael Collins (Cork South West) and Richard O’Donoghue (Limerick County).
Fitzmaurice, a vocal advocate for rural and agricultural concerns, says the time has come to build a new political party.
“It’s time to build a new party that is the natural home for the majority of people and politicians and will be a refuge for respectful dialogue, effective action and unyielding common sense for generations to come”.
Fitzmaurice’s participation in Independent Ireland is expected to significantly contribute to the party’s mission, bringing his experience and commitment to bear on the policies of the party.
“We will be contesting upcoming elections with a full slate of priorities and policies and they will be released in tranches of two or three policies at a time. The party’s policies will reflect the real-world concerns of Middle Ireland”.
Leader of Independent Ireland, Michael Collins TD had this to say about Monday morning’s announcement: “We are delighted that Michael Fitzmaurice has been willing to take the leap of faith and commit to building our new party with us”.
