Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice is calling on the Government to intervene in the Bus Eireann strike to ensure payments are made to local private bus operators who transport children to local schools.
He said: “Private bus operators provide a service to local schools and are paid by Bus Eireann. These bus operators have been informed their payments are being deferred due to industrial action.
“The operators are now under huge financial strain as they provide their own bus, driver and diesel and are now expected to fund the service out of their own pockets until the strike is over.
“The operators need the Government to intervene and guarantee their payments regardless of the outcome of this strike.
“If the strike goes on indefinitely the operators have told me they will find it increasingly difficult to continue with the service.
“The Government can intervene on their behalf and make sure the children of our county have a bus service to school.”
