Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Deputy Michael Finneran, has welcomed the announcement of a 2% increase in Ireland’s milk quota from next month. The announcement was made by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mary Coughlan TD, following an agreement reached at the Council of Agriculture Ministers meeting in Brussels. ‘This 2 per cent increase amounts to an additional 108 million litres in quotas for Ireland,’ said Deputy Finneran. ‘This reflects an optimistic assessment from the Council of Agriculture Ministers of the future demands for milk. There is no doubt that Ireland has the capacity to produce additional milk and it is vital that we give the milk sector here the freedom to respond to increased demand.’ ‘I know that Minister Coughlan is now looking ahead to the CAP Health Check, and she has repeated her call to the Commission to ensure that actions are taken within the Health Check to provide a smooth transition to a situation post 2014 when quotas no longer play a part in market supports,’ said the Fianna Fáil TD.
