Fightback in vain as ladies beaten by Leitrim

TG4 Connacht Ladies IFC Play-Off: Leitrim 6-8 Roscommon 5-10

A spirited late comeback from Roscommon just failed to change the outcome of this high-scoring play-off at Charlestown last Sunday.

Leitrim led at one stage in the second half by 14 points (6-7 to 2-5). To their great credit, Roscommon fought back well, but just ran out of time in the end.

The Leitrim star was Aine Tighe, who scored an incredible 4-2 in this game. When Leitrim extended their lead to 14 points it looked like a heavy defeat was on the cards for Roscommon.

But goals from Laura McLoone and Jenny Higgins gave Roscommon hope, and when McLoone scored a fifth Roscommon goal in the 56th minute, the gap was down to three.

Points from Jenny Higgins and a pointed free from Jenny Downey cut the deficit to just one – but the Rossies just couldn’t get an equaliser, or indeed a winning goal.

Roscommon: R Timothy; N Feeney, C Gunning, T Kelly; J Cregg (0-2), S Kenny, A McLoone; L Fleming (0-1), J Higgins (1-2); S Tully, J Downey (0-3), R Fitzmaurice (1-1); M Freyne, D Connell (0-1), R Ryan (0-1). Subs: C Beirne for Kelly, L McLoone (2-0) for Freyne, S Brady for Ryan.
