Farmers reminded of September 14th fertiliser deadline

Farmers are being reminded that Monday, September 14th is the final day on which chemical nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisers can be spread this year.

The closed period begins after September 14th as grass growth and the ability of crops to use nutrients decline during the autumn.

Teagasc says planned nitrogen and phosphorus applications should therefore be completed before the deadline.

Farmers who retain fertiliser stocks after the deadline must ensure the quantities are correctly recorded on the Department of Agriculture’s National Fertiliser Database.

Teagasc says the deadline does not apply to lime or potassium fertiliser.

Farmers have also been advised to consider current grass supplies carefully following the dry weather experienced on many farms this summer.

Where grass covers remain particularly low, temporary housing of some cattle may be necessary to allow grazing areas to recover.
