Farmers have been granted a one-week extension to this year’s slurry-spreading period following exceptional weather conditions.
Slurry may now be spread up to and including Wednesday, October 7, with the closed period beginning on Thursday, October 8.
The extension was announced by Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon and Housing Minister James Browne following the prolonged dry conditions experienced during the summer and subsequent surge in grass growth following the return of rainfall.
Farmers intending to avail of the additional spreading period are required to register with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine before spreading.
The Irish Farmers’ Association welcomed the move, describing the additional week as a practical response to the difficult conditions experienced by farmers this year.
