Fallon: Joint Committee meeting on Lough Funshinagh ‘very positive’

Local Independent councillor Laurence Fallon has described last week’s meeting with the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine to discuss ongoing flooding at Lough Funshinagh as having been “positive”.

Cllr. Fallon, along with members of the Lough Funshinagh Flood Action Group and local public representatives, attended the meeting (held on Wednesday, 26th of October), where the plight of residents and farmers in Ballagh and Lisphelim was raised.

Speaking to the Roscommon People following the meeting, Cllr. Fallon said: “I would say it was a very positive meeting where we presented our case and received offers of support and help.

“We must now devise a solution and that will involve all political parties, the Office of Public Works and National Parks and Wildlife working with the local authority to ensure a pipe is laid as quickly as possible within the current legal framework”.

Addressing the Dáil on Wednesday of last week, Independent TD Denis Naughten also called on Taoiseach Micheál Martin to directly intervene in the matter and establish a national taskforce.

Mr. Martin said he would examine Deputy Naughten’s proposal and conceded that the Government must move in a “more proactive way” when it comes to climate adaption measures across the country.
