Exciting Eileen Óg Heritage Festival in Ballintubber

The Eileen Óg Heritage Festival in Ballintubber began yesterday (Wednesday) night and an action-packed programme of events will be held until the conclusion of the festival on Friday, July 22nd.

It will begin on the Saturday at 1 pm, with an exhibition of cooking and crafts. There will also be vintage cars, a country market, guided tours of the castle and a display of any findings from the ongoing archaeology project.

There will also be a car boot sale and beauty and health hut at Kenny’s pub. A tug o’war will be held at Garvey’s Lounge between the American visitors who are conducting the archaeology project and locals.

There will be potato-picking and traditional food served. There will be a Family Fun Day at Kenny’s, along with music, dancing and street entertainment.

On the Saturday night, music and dancing will be held.

On Sunday, July 17th, a historical village walk will be held, meeting at the old schoolhouse at 2 pm.

There will be a horse-shoeing demonstration at the Old Forge, along with vintage cars and old farm machinery.

Scenes depicting the 1916 Rising will be on display in the Old Schoolhouse. Kenny’s will feature ‘Dancing at the Crossroads’, followed later with music from Christy O’Grady.

Garvey’s Garden Party is not to be missed, while there will also be an opportunity to watch old DVDs featuring fairs and festivals from the Nineties.

On Monday, July 18th, a Medieval Camp for children will be held at the Old Schoolhouse at 2 pm, featuring storytelling and dressing up in medieval costume. Booking is essential.

On Thursday, July 21st, there will be a Farewell Party, with a barbecue and music by ‘Moonlight Serenaders’ and ‘Irish Showtime’.

On Friday, July 22nd, there will be a Swords & Daggers Display at Ballintubber, Castlerea at 8 pm. There will also be music sessions in Kenny’s and Garvey’s, showcasing events from the previous month.
