Exciting Basketball finals

After several weeks of preliminary matches, the finals of the Boys and Girls U13 & U16 Basketball took place on Sunday 20th April at the Community Centre, Strokestown.    Under 13 Girls. Ballaghaderreen v Boyle.      The girls on both sides played extremely well in a very competitive game. The first half ended with a score of 9-6 to Ballaghaderreen in a very close match, then the girls from Ballaghaderreen pulled ahead. Sonia Waldron shot 8 out of the 12 points scored in the second half to help her team win 21-14 to take the title and the medals. Ballaghaderreen Team: Sonia Waldron, Kieva Tansey, Aoibheann Durkin, Dearbhla McCormack, Rachel Dowling, Tori Towey, Mary Fannon, Amy Kelly, Kayleigh McDonnell, Pooja Puri. Boyle Team: Nicole Kering, Saoirse Noone, Emma Tiernan, Melissa Mattimoe, Eithne McNamara, Cassie Tymon, Hannah Clohessy, Natasha Regan. Under 16 Girls. Castlerea v Douglas Hyde    Both teams played a very competitive first half with a close score at half time of 10-7 to Castlerea. The Castlerea girls had the upper hand in the second half pulling away to win the match 33-15 and take away the trophy and the gold medals. Castlerea Team: Sarah Larkin, Aisling O’Rourke, Denise Igoe, Laura Henry, Laura Sweeney, Eleanor Kennedy, Sarah Joyce, Laura Griffith, Emer Ryan, Claire Kelly.    Douglas Hyde Team:  Sarah Morhan, Laura Bruen, Michelle McDermot, Danica Lavin, Danielle Madden, Pooky Mitchell, Sharon Bruen, Sorcha Dowd, Morag Taite, Siobhan Greevy. Under 13 Boys. Castlerea v Ballaghaderreen. This was another very closely fought final where both teams played extremely well, with the scores remaining very tight throughout the match. Castlerea finally took the game and the title by beating Ballaghaderreen 28-25 with an outstanding displaying of shooting by Niall Connaughton who scored 20 of his teams 28 points. Castlerea Team: Michael Henry, Niall Connaughton, Tomas Callaghan, Dara O’Loughlin, Cathal Neary, Padraig Colleary, Cormac Guthrie, Brian Guthrie, Peter Farrell, Kevin Igoe. Ballaghaderreen Team: Derek Rogers, Niall Gallagher, Darragh Dunne, Sean McHugh, Seamus Cunniffe, Kyle Lowry, Connor O’Donnell, Shairaze Akram, Cian Hanley, Emmett O’Brien. Under 16 Boys. Ballaghaderreen v Ballintubber/Ballymoe. The last final of the tournament ended a day of excellent play and sportsmanship by all the teams taking part. This final saw Ballaghaderreen run away with the first half of the match with a score at half-time of 21-9 produced by some slick passing and all-round team effort.       The half-time ‘team talk’ did much to boost the confidence of the Ballintubber/Ballymoe team who came out and showed a tough fighting spirit to bring the score back on par but the outstanding play by the Ballaghaderreen team meant that they came out winners with a score of 33-26, taking the medals and title.
