€155,000 boost for recycling

The Minister for the Environment has provided over €155,000 in funding to Co. Roscommon  to support the operating costs of recycling facilities. The announcement was made yesterday (Wednesday).   It follows Mr. John Gormley’s announcement that the Environment Fund programme is allocating money to assist local authorities with costs incurred in operating recycling facilities.   Roscommon has been allocated €155,800 in funding to aid with the facilities in the county. Bring banks and recycling facilities in the county are very busy after the Christmas period.   REPAK say that 80 thousand tones of waste is produced throughout the country around the Christmas season.   The Environment Fund was established with the money obtained from the Plastic Bag Levy introduced in March 2002 and the Landfill Levy introduced in July 2002.   The Fund is used to provide assistance or support to a range of waste management, litter and other environmental issues.
