There was double delight in Knockcroghery over the past week, with strong local links to two major sporting successes.
Ireland’s 800m European champion Mark English has strong ties to the area. His grandfather, Pat English, lived in Knockcroghery and was a prominent footballer for St Patrick’s and Roscommon before later moving to Donegal through his work as a Garda.
Roscommon Town golfer Thomas Higgins, meanwhile, won the Irish Close Championship in Portumna at the weekend. It has also emerged that English and Higgins are related: their great-grandmothers were members of the Leonard family in the local area and were sisters.
