Elphin College wins All-Ireland Volleyball title

Elphin Community College has won the All-Ireland Colleges Senior A volleyball title for 2007. In the final in Dublin on Tuesday they defeated St. Brigids of Loughrea by 3 sets to 1, thus reversing the result in last year’s final when Loughrea were too strong for the Elphin team.   To add to Elphin’s joy Fintan Cregg was voted the final’s most valuable player.    Speaking to the Roscommon People on Tuesday evening, Paul Noone, who is the  coach of the Elphin team, said ‘we are thrilled to win this title which is our first ever at this level. We played brilliantly against a very strong Loughrea team but we were confident coming up that we could win and we played to our strengths’.    In the first set Elphin won by 25 points to 20 and they went 2-0 ahead after the second set with an emphatic 25-17 win. The third set was a thriller. Loughrea were well ahead but Elphin came back but Loughrea won that one by 25 to 21 to put themselves back into the match. In the fourth set Elphin stuck to their guns and although Loughrea did everything in their power to level the match at 2 sets each, Elphin edged out winners by 27 points to 25 to give them the title by three sets to one.   ‘It was a team effort and we have prepared so hard for this final. Ger (Brady) and Fintan(Cregg) are very experienced now and we have added young players like Brian Oates and Kiev Reynolds this year. It’s a great achievement for the school’ Paul concluded.    The members of the victorious Elphin panel were Ger Brady, Kevin Brady, Fintan Cregg, Frankie Cregg, Kiev Reynolds, Brian Oates, David Mc Dermott, David Kelleher, Michael Kielty. Coach: Paul Noone.
