Electricity prices 8.1% higher than a year ago

Electricity prices were 8.1% higher in August than during the same month last year, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The figures come as the overall Consumer Price Index increased by 3.7% in the 12 months to August.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels collectively recorded an annual increase of 8.5%.

Home-heating oil recorded an even sharper increase, with prices 44.6% higher than in August 2025.

Natural gas prices increased by 2.2%, while prices for coal, briquettes and peat were 1.3% higher.

Education services recorded the largest increase among the main categories measured by the CSO, rising by 8.9% over the year.

Transport costs increased by 5.4%.

Underlying inflation, excluding energy and unprocessed food, stood at 2.9%.

The figures show that while headline inflation remains considerably below the peaks experienced earlier in the decade, energy and housing-related costs continue to place upward pressure on household expenditure.
