EirGrid submits planning application for North Connacht 110kV Project

EirGrid Chief Infrastructure Officer, Michael Mahon, described the planning application submission as ‘a key milestone’.

EirGrid, operator and developer of the national electricity grid, has submitted a Strategic Infrastructure Development planning application to An Bord Pleanála for the North Connacht 110kV Project.

The State body says the application was submitted following extensive technical assessments, consultations and engagement with local communities, as well as with Mayo and Roscommon County Councils, and other key stakeholders.

The new underground electricity cable will connect Moy substation in Ballina, Co. Mayo to Tonroe substation in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

“The project will enhance the regional electricity network, enabling it meet new demands for electricity and supporting economic growth in the area. It will also facilitate new renewable generation, which will help meet Government climate action targets of achieving 80 per cent of electricity consumption via renewable energy sources by 2030,” EirGrid stated.

Speaking about the latest step in the project, Chief Infrastructure Officer, Michael Mahon said: “The submission of this planning application is a significant milestone. This project is key to strengthening the electricity grid in the west and helping to achieve our 2030 renewable ambitions.

“We would like to thank the communities and stakeholders in both Mayo and Roscommon who continue to engage with the project team. Without their input at each stage of this project we would not be able to reach this point. We look forward to continuing this engagement as the project progresses”.

Subject to planning approval, the project will move into the construction phase in 2023.

EirGrid says a dedicated community benefit fund will be established for the North Connacht 110kV Project and will support local voluntary, community and sporting organisations in the vicinity of the project area to develop sustainable projects which will benefit the whole community.
