eircom league weekend previews

St. Patrick Athletic v Shamrock Rovers Saint Patrick’s returned to the top of the eircom League of Ireland following a straight-forward 4-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.    Shamrock Rovers went down to a very strong Drogheda United. The result was in some doubt in the dying minutes after a brave fightback from the Hoops.   This game will be a true Dublin derby. Only one winner for me – St. Pats. Derry City v Bohemians Derry City’s abysmal start to the eircom League of Ireland season continued as UCD left the Brandywell with all three points following a 1-0 win.   Owen Heary struck late to deny Galway United their first win in the League of Ireland this season. Heary’s goal gave Bohemians a 1-1 draw. This is a must-win game for Pat Fenlon’s side, but I am going for Bohs to take the points. UCD v Longford Town Dave Mooney netted his third goal of the season to give Longford Town their first win of the season. Mooney has scored all three of Longford’s league goals this season as Town beat Waterford United 1-0.  UCD took the points following substitute Timmy Purcell’s late goal. However, the Students had at least their fair share of the game with Derry.  A draw for me. Wins also for Drogheda United, and Bray Wanderers. First Division Athlone Town v Finn Harps Town scored twice in the closing fifteen minutes to climb to fourth in the First Division of the League of Ireland.   Eric Lavine and Paul McTiernan hit the goals. Finn Harps’ miserable start to 2007 continued at Station Road, Newbridge as they lost 1-0 to Kildare County. Home win for the Town. Wins also for Dundalk and Shelbourne. – Dave Dibble
