Éamon Ó Cuív to give talk on Fr. O’Flanagan

Online event to promote local tourism

Fianna Fáil TD and former Minister, Éamon Ó Cuív will give a talk on Fr. Michael O’Flanagan as part of a St. Patrick’s Day event highlighting tourism and enterprise in Co. Roscommon.

The event’s main organiser, Cllr. Tony Waldron, says the virtual event will be a celebration of the many tourist attractions along The Suck Valley Way.

“This event will take place on St. Patrick’s Day with a time to be confirmed. We will be linking in with communities right along the Suck Valley Way, and we will be featuring local points of interest including Roscommon Castle, Ballintubber Castle, and Donamon.

“We are delighted that Deputy Ó Cuív has agreed to give a talk on Fr. Michael O’Flanagan, who was born in Ballintubber of course.

“We will be aiming to promote tourism and enterprise in Co. Roscommon and we have also been in contact with media organisations and other groups in the United States.

“The event will be streamed live on The Suck Valley Way Facebook page on St. Patrick’s Day,” he said.

Deputy Éamon Ó Cuiv said he has enjoyed delving further into the life of the former Sinn Féin President and political and community activist.

“Fr. Michael O’Flanagan is very much a forgotten man in terms of Irish history. I have been absolutely fascinated reading his interest in community development, something that I am also very interested in.

“He was also interested in the Irish language of course, much like another fellow from Co. Roscommon, Dr. Douglas Hyde, and I think that his work in America shows that there is much more breadth to his story,” he said.

Further details and confirmation of starting times for this event and Deputy Ó Cuív’s talk will be available in upcoming editions of the Roscommon People.
